Present Perfect Tense


• Present Perfect is used to declare an act that occurred at some time in the past.
• Present Perfect Tense is used with the statement of the specific time such as: yesterday, one year ago, two weeks ago, last week, Pls I was 10 years old, Pls I lived at Jakarta, at That moment, that day, one day, and forth.
• Present Perfect Tense times can be used with non-specific statements such as: ever, never, many times, installments times, once, before, so far, already, yet, and so forth.

The figure shows the existence of Present Perfect, which is at an unspecified time in the past.
Elementary Forms of the Present Perfect Tense
1. Positive
Subject + Has / have + Verb 3 (verb 3 is also called past participle)
2. Negative
Subject + Has / have + Not + Verb 3
3. Interrogative
Has / have + Subject + Verb 3
Examples of the Present Perfect Tense Sentences
1. I have watched That movie 3 times.
2. There have been many floods in Indonesia.
3. Scientists have traveled to the Moon and Mars.
4. Ordinary people have not traveled to Moon and Mars.
5. I think I have met her before.
6. Have you read the book yet?
7. Nobody here has ever seen a ghost.
8. Has there been a war in Japan?
Note that the examples above in accordance with the basic pattern of the Present Perfect Tense, of course only added to the objects and adverbs, It is the same as Indonesian.
Use of Present Perfect Tense
1. Stating experience
Present Perfect can be used to express the experience, good experience that has experienced or not. Present Perfect is used to describe a particular event. Example:
• I have been to England.
The sentence states that I have the experience to go to England. Can also coupled with the information object (eg: with him) or a description of time (eg: once).
• He has never traveled by plane.
• I have studied Home.
• We have met uterus.
2. Stating something that changes from time to time
Example:
• You have been thinner since the last time We met.
• His Home has really improved since he joined the course.
• Harvard has changed from one of the world's most popular universities.
3. Stating an achievement
Example:
• The baby has learned how to walk.
• Scientists have invented many new medicines.
• Man has walked on the Moon.
4. Declaring an act we expect but have not occurred
Example:
• The rain hasn't stopped.
• They have not arrived.
• I have not finished my homework yet.
5. Stating some of the actions that have occurred in the past at different times
Example:
• I have Had two tests and three presentations so far this semester.
• She has talked to doctors about her problem installments, but there is no solution yet.
• The government has caught eight corruptors so far this year.

Present Perfect Tense

Present perfect tense is used to specify an action that has taken place sometime in the past, time of which is not known.

Usage

•    Used to describe ones experience.

Example: I have been to London (this means I have had the experience of being in London)  [time period not mentioned.]
I have never been to London.
I have been to London couple of times.
Akshay has never travelled by train.

•    Used to talk about achievements/accomplishments of individuals or the society.

Example: Scientists have deciphered the DNA.
Man has reached the Moon.
My daughter has learnt to speak well.

•    Used to talk about the change that has happened over a period of time.

Example: My English has really improved since I moved to a convent school.
Life has become fast with the advent of internet.
The Government has become strict about cleanliness issues.

•    Used when we are waiting for an action to happen or get completed.

Example:  Simran has not finished her assignment yet.
Rain has not stopped.
The Air India flight has not arrived.
Her son has not yet learnt how to walk.

•    Used to denote multiple actions at different times.

Example: She has undergone five ultrasounds and six kinds of blood tests till now.
The terrorists have attacked the hotel four times.
We have had many obstacles in this project.

•    Used to discuss events that have completed just at the moment of speaking.

Example:  Have you done the cleaning?
                  Yes, I have just finished it.


NOTE: Present Perfect is always used with an unspecified time period. We cannot use Present Perfect with expressions like ‘yesterday’, ‘tomorrow’, ‘one year ago’, ‘that day’ etc. We can use Present Perfect with expressions like, several times, many, before, so far, in the last year etc. For specific time expressions we need to use simple past.

Example
:  I went to Japan last year (Simple Past). [This sentence means I went to Japan an year ago]
                 I have been to Japan in the last year. (Present Perfect) [This sentence means I went to Japan atleast once in the time period 365 days ago till now]

Question form of Present Perfect

Have you eaten your lunch?
Have you finished the work I gave you?
Have you taken any medicine?

Use of For and since with Present Perfect

‘For’ is used for a time period while ‘since’ is used for a point of time.
Example: I have been here for the last 40 minutes.
I have been here since 10 am.
Deepika hasn’t called for the last three weeks.
Deepika hasn’t called since August.
